Meet Founder and Head Pastry Chef
Alexandra Alessi Kidd

From Dark Matter to Cake Batter
Chef Alexandra has worn many hats: First Clarinetist in several orchestras and ensembles in Washington, D.C.; tax preparer at a high-value accounting firm; Italian language student in Rome, Italy; graduate student astrophysics researcher in The Netherlands. Throughout it all, however, there was pastry.
During and between all of Chef Alexandra’s major endeavors, she worked in bakeries and pastry shops under the tutelage of some of the most talented and successful pastry chefs in Washington, D.C. and abroad. Through these experiences Chef Alexandra discovered that she didn’t have to look as far as outer space to find the joyful, creative, and inspiring expression of her talents that she had always dreamed of; indeed, she has always been happiest when sharing her latest pastry creations with a treasured friend or an inevitably appreciative stranger.
And so, Chef Alexandra traded in her telescopes and supercomputers for an apron and a rolling pin, and in 2021 Jelly Roll Soul Fine Pastries was born!

What's Next for Jelly Roll Soul?
Jelly Roll Soul’s namesake is legendary jazz musician Charles Mingus’ song ‘My Jelly Roll Soul’ on his acclaimed Blues & Roots album. Chef Alexandra takes inspiration from Washington, D.C.’s jazz and art scenes, and is in the planning stages of putting down her own roots with a pastry café and art space under the Jelly Roll Soul banner. Jelly Roll Soul Café will regularly host live jazz events and feature local musicians and visual artists, with the goal of celebrating and enriching the vibrant culture of Washington, D.C.
In the meantime, look out for Jelly Roll Soul at farmer's markets and pop-up venues in and around the D.C. area!
